The Abbey Physic Community Garden, Faversham
Faversham Quakers are keen supporters of The Abbey Physic Community Garden, which provides a much needed haven in the heart of the town for those seeking to restore their sense of well-being and connection. We feel the service the garden provides is a living example of our testimonies on equality, peace and sustainability.
How did it start?
The Abbey Physic Community Garden was started twenty five years ago in the mid-1990s when local people, including Faversham Quakers Jean and David Adderley, saw an opportunity to support people to recover from mental illness, overcome social isolation, develop confidence and skills to improve their quality of life. It does this by supporting people to build resilience and make their lives manageable, which in turn allows them to return to work or education and re-integrate back into their community.
The garden has become a much appreciated community asset, run by a willing band of volunteers and a small core of paid staff who enable a variety of educational and restorative activities. The garden attracted over 5,000 visitors in 2017 and outreach is increasing.
Who is it aimed at?
The garden welcomes those who have skills to offer, want to get involved in a practical way, maybe learn a new skill, or just hang out and make friendships.
What happens in the garden?
Members of the garden and visitors can learn a wide variety of skills in organic horticulture, cookery, arts and crafts, as well as enjoy the beautiful surroundings. There is a thriving ‘Men in Sheds’ project, a Happiness café and places where young children can play safely.
Where is it?
Situated just down from St Mary’s Church behind the old Grammar School.
